The director of the Department is a Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ilya Kasavin.
The decision to establish the Department of Social Epistemology within the Division of Epistemology and Logic was made on June 21, 2005, at a session of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Social Epistemology is a new branch of philosophical research, deeply connected with the fields of Cognitive Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities, exploring the cognitive process from an interdisciplinary perspective. This branch has primarily developed in Anglo-American philosophy and is centered around the journals "Social Epistemology", "Episteme", "Science in Context".
The establishment of the Department is the first instance of institutionalization of this philosophical branch as an independent subdivision in both Russian and global philosophy.
"Epistemology and Philosophy of Science", The journal of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, has been published by the collective of the Department of Social Epistemology since 2004.
Four research fellows of the Department are in the Top 100 most cited philosophers of Russia.
