The letter to the President of the Russian Federation

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR UNIVERSAL DIALOGUE

December 7, 2009

Honorable Dmitry A. Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation

Ilinskaya Street 23

Moscow 103132

Russian Federation

Honorable President Medvedev:

The Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences is under threat of being expelled from its historical building in Volkhonka Street 14/1, Central Moscow. The International Society for Universal Dialogue, a member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies, as well as many philosophers from various countries of the world are very concerned that the discontinuation of the Institute at its current, historically significant location will undermine the future of Russian philosophy. This would be a regrettable and irreparable loss for world philosophy as well.

The Institute of Philosophy, representing the best of the Russian philosophy, is an important participant in the world philosophical dialogue. It earned a great deal of respect among the international scholarly community for its participation at the world philosophical congresses and its outstanding publications on Russian philosophical thought and in major areas of philosophical knowledge. Its groundbreaking works substantially contributed to the better understanding of the root causes of our current social and global problems, and to the search for their possible solutions.

Today it would be impossible to talk seriously about successful international cooperation on nuclear disarmament and solutions to the global ecological, economic and cultural problems without promoting global consciousness based on the philosophy of humanity. Russian philosophy plays a unique and substantial role in this process, and its continuing contribution to it is vital to the struggle to achieve a peaceful and prosperous world.

It is our hope that you will be able to do whatever is within your power to prevent the closing of the historical building of the Institute of Philosophy and thus to avert the irreparable damage that this would cause to Russian philosophy as a vital part of the world philosophical culture. Please preserve and protect the Institute of Philosophy. The international philosophical community will be very grateful.

Sincerely,

Edward V. Demenchonok, President of the International Society for Universal Dialogue
