  PAPERS

by Alexey Savin

2017

The article aims to explain the connection of Marcuse’s concept of dehistorization with his interpretation and criticism of the Heideggerian concept of historicity. Dehistorization in Marcuse’s philosophy, according to my tentative definition, is the kind of transformation of the creative social forces and human abilities denying an existing reality that makes them elements of the mechanism producing and reproducing the existent reality, and thereby makes them a manner of repression of the human striving for freedom and happiness and a way to perpetuate domination. According to Marcuse, dehistorization is the main form of reproduction of the false totality. The idea of dehistorization is the prevailing critical concept in Marcuse’s philosophy. It appears in the course of his criticism of fascism. The basis of the formation of the dehistorization concept is Marcuse’s criticism and interpretation of Heidegger’s conception of historicity during his “Heideggerian Marxism” period (1928–1933). This Heideggerian conception is the ultimate achievement of contemporary philosophy. The ultimate character of this achievement is given to it, according to Marcuse, that it treats history from the viewpoint of being in contrast to Hegel’s idealistic dialectics and German historicism of the 19th century, which interpreted it from the viewpoint of consciousness or the spirit. There are four main tendencies in Marcuse’s criticism and transformation of Heidegger’s conception of historicity. 1. The deformalization of Heidegger’s treatment of historicity of Dasein. The explanation of the material substance of historicity, i.e. the explanation of the material character of conditions of human existence (Dasein) as the definitive feature of historicity. 2. The concretization of Dasein, its treatment not as an individual, but as a class in view of substantial differences of the environment (Umwelt), material conditions of its existence. 3. Following from both the deformalization of historicity and the concretization of Dasein – the rehabilitation of the “being-with” (Mitsein) and the public sphere (Mitwelt), and, thereby, of the space of political struggle as the sphere of authenticity. 4. The disclosure of the fundamental role of the phenomenologically considered spatiality (Räumlichkeit) in the constitution of concrete historicity, i.e. historicity determined by the material, social and political character of Dasein and the world. Marcuse’s interpretation and criticism of Heidegger’s conception of historicity and his criticism of dehistorization based on it paves the way to his ontological interpretation of Marxist dialectics as the method of the struggle against dehistorization and false totality and as the only truly revolutionary way of thinking.

  • Gustav Shpet’s Phenomenological Innovations in Light of Genetic Phenomenology // Russian Studies in Philosophy. 2016. Vol. 54. № 1. P. 35–47.

This article examines the innovations introduced to phenomenological philosophy by the Russian philosopher Gustav Gustavovich Shpet. We identify the motifs and results of Shpet's problematization of the Husserlian concept of constitution, and we develop Shpet's treatment of the source of semantic genesis as a generative experience (“understanding within the species”).

  • Criticism of Naturalism and Transcendental Turn in Phenomenology (Concept of Epoche and Reduction in Husserl’s “Idea of Phenomenology”) // Vox. Issue 21. 2016. (in Russian)

The article is aimed at finding out the theoretical ground, genesis, and meaning of the “transcendental turn” in Husserl’s phenomenology, that was delivered for the first time in 1907 within the framework of his course «Hauptstuecke aus der Phaenomenologie und der Kritik der Vernunft» at Gottingen university. From the author’s point of view an impulse to the turn was Husserl’s criticism of the naturalistic epistemologies’ essential philosophical inconsistency. Conditions of possibility for the criticisim are phenomenological entrance methods: epoche and reduction. The result of this methods implementation is a destruction of the naturalistic, i.e. based on the natural attitude, interpretation of transcendence–immanence opposition and at the same time demonstration of a phenomenological dimension of the main epistemological problem. In fact the transcendental turn being Cartesian and Kantian one at a go is nothing but this process. The author means that the meaning of the transcendental reduction consist of two constituents. The negative component inhibits a metabasis from philosophical (phenomenological) to scientific dimension of the main epistemological problem and vise verse, the positive one keeps open the philosophical dimension of the problem in its purity.

  • On the Essence of Phenomenological Philosophy // Horizon: Studies in Phenomenology. Volume 4. Issue 1. 2015. P. 9‒37. (in Russian)

This article aims to define the phenomenological philosophy. To achieve this goal, the author exposes a phenomenological philosophy’s genesis by means of genetic phenomenology . This investigation is necessitated by the problem situation. On the one hand, many versions of phenomenological philosophy emerged and developed; on the other hand, the idea of postphenomenological philosophy was put forth. Therefore the question inevitably arises about the foundation of unity of phenomenological philosophy and about its essence. In order to solve the problem the author traces the history of phenomenology’s basic methodological concepts epoche and reduction , and clarifies the meaning of the discussion on the nature of the phenomenological method. In the light of genetic phenomenology, epoche and reduction are the exposure of the connection between habitualization and horizon  in the main aspect as the connection between the natural attitude as the primary habit (Urgewohnheit) and the world  as the universal  horizon. The analysis of the history of interpretation and criticism of Husserlian epoche and reduction concepts reveals latent consensus among thinkers, who adhere to different variants of phenomenological philosophy, in the understanding of the phenomenological enterprise as such. The author demonstrates that the universal theme of phenomenological research within the framework of the latent basic consensus is the intimacy with the world. The general method of phenomenological investigation is the explication of the history of the intimacy with the world as the origin of all thinkable horizons. The author supposes that the phenomenological philosophy is the disclosure of the transcendental history of the domestic world  (Heimwelt). Moreover the phenomenological philosophy implies the phenomenological understanding of the phenomenological reduction, i. e., comprehension of its historicity and its connection with the horizon of the world, which it takes as the theme. Hence the author infers his definition of phenomenological philosophy. Phenomenological philosophy is the genealogy of the intimacy with the world. (Phaenomenologische Philosophie ist Genealogie des Vertrauens mit «der» Welt).

  • Sense formation from the viewpoint of the phenomenological philosophy // Vox. 2015. Issue 18. URL: https://vox-journal.org/content/Vox18/Vox18-SavinA.pdf. (In Russian)
