The monograph presents collected works continuing the development of the theme of man in German classical philosophy, discusses the problem of the priority of anthropology over technology, analyzes new concepts of philosophical anthropology, highlights new tendencies in the philosophical understanding of man.

Philosophical understanding of human nature in European philosophy has radically changed in the past years. Decisive transformation of old views is conditioned, first of all, by discoveries in the field of medicine and natural sciences, movement of “trans-humanists”, which set the task of creating a “post-human” individual, development of transpersonal psychology coming out against the Cartesian-Newtonian picture of the world, and formation of post-modernist reflection declaring the “death of man”.

Modern discussions on human nature actualize the problem of anthropodicy. Today the very task of justification of man as a special kind of being proves to be topical.

The monograph gives a detailed account of the philosophical search aimed at comprehending a human being. The contents of such trends as synergic, religious, post-modernist, transpersonal anthropology are exposed. The book deals with such topical and significant problems as the subject of philosophical anthropology, “death of man” as a phenomenon of modern thinking, the symbol as a clue to solutions of human nature, the essence of man. New interpretations of human nature, methodology of humanitarian thinking, man in the world of social knowledge are discussed. The book presents a wide spectrum of philosophical problems related to interpretation of man.

The book presents a variety of philosophical doctrines related to comprehension of the phenomenon of man. The authors show the birth of the philosophy of man in the philosophy of the antiquity and development of philosophical anthropology in the 18^th century. Attention is paid to philosophical anthropology as a special philosophical trend that arose in the beginning of the 20^th century. It was not so much a separate philosophical discipline (in the form, in which it was initially substantiated by O.Kasmann) as a philosophical conception resting on the works by M. Sheler. Philosophical anthropologists (A.Gehlen, H.Plessner, and others) brought back Kant’s idea to embrace real human existence in all its integrity, to determine the place and attitude of man to the world around. The book also presents social and religious anthropology, special attention is paid to recent anthropological conceptions.
