A. Kara-Murza. The Italian journey of Peter Chaadayev (1824–1825). Moscow, 2019. 112 p.

The monograph of the famous philosopher and historian explores the circumstances of the stay of the Russian thinker Pyotr Yakovlevich Chaadayev (1794–1856), whose 225th anniversary was celebrated in 2019, in Italy in December 1824 - August 1825. Going abroad in the summer of 1823, the retired guard, Mr. Chaadayev initially did not plan to visit the Italian states at all, confining himself to Germany, England, France and, possibly, Switzerland. However, during the voyage, it was Italy (the Sardinian Kingdom, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Papal State and the Lombard-Venetian Kingdom, which was part of the Austrian Empire) that became the most important stage in its European journey.

According to the author, it was in Florence and Rome that Chaadayev formed the main points of his original historiosophical concept, which were then stated in the “Philosophical Letters” in the second half of the 1820s. A separate plot of the book is an analysis of the circumstances of Chaadayev’s return to Russia in 1826, at the height of the investigation in the case of the participants in the “Decembrist conspiracy”.

The heroes of each essay show the city from completely different angles and make us look into the soul of the city reflected in the water.

The monograph is devoted to the study of empirical and Marxist aspects in the work of the outstanding Russian philosopher, public figure and revolutionary Alexander AlexandrovichBogdanov. The paper investigates his ideas of historical development of society, based on a positivist approach to the idea of historical materialism and Marxism in General, embodied in his concept of empiricism, and, in the future, the General organizational science – tectology. Special attention in the monograph is paid to its philosophical and journalistic polemics with a number of Russian Marxists and, specifically, Lenin. The book is intended for philosophers, political scientists, sociologists and all those interested in the history of Russian social thought.

S. Chizhkov. The Metaphysics of Freedom and the Idea of a State in the Philosophy of Boris Chicherin. Moscow. IPhRAS, 2017.

The monograph is devoted to the study of The Metaphysics of Freedom of Boris N. Chicherin (1828-1904), Russia’s outstanding philosopher, historian, and legal theorist. The book analyses the development of the idea of freedom, and its formation on the basis of Chicherin’s ethical and legal theory. Particular attention in the monograph is paid to the analysis of his concept of human alliances, including an analysis of the idea of State as people’s Supreme Union. With his concept of “human unions” Chicherin in his legal doctrine sought to complement the personalistic doctrine of freedom by the concept of “objective morality” embodied by his “human unions”.

In 2016 Russia celebrates the 250th birthday of the outstanding Russian historian, social and political thinker N.M.Karamzin (1766-1826) — a key figure of Russian philosophy of history. In the given collection of articles, the authors conceptualize the basic historiosophical concept of N.M. Karamzin about the fact that Russia is a deeply distinctive part of European civilization. This is the second book in the series "Philosophy and the historical destiny of Russia", which was opened in 2013 with the book devoted to the 200th anniversary of A. I. Herzen. It is designed to philosophers, historians, literary scholars, and anyone interested in the legacy of N. M. Karamzin and overall philosophy of Russian history.

A. Kara-Murza. The Swiss wandering of Nikolai Karamzin (1789–1790). Moscow, 2016.

In the monograph of the famous philosopher and historian, a version is put forward, according to which "the European journey" of a young Nikolai Karamzin committed in 1789-1790, and described in "Letters of a Russian traveler", was taken not by his own will. Karamzin was sent from Moscow by his friends, who sought to avoid conflict between the "Novikov circle" and the authorities who prepared the defeat of the Moscow masons. This explains the duration of the trip (fourteen months) and the absence of letters to the family and friends, remaining in Moscow. Special attention is paid to Karamzin’s stay in Switzerland, first in Geneva, in which Karamzin was delayed for as long as five months. According to the author, in Geneva, the Russian fugitive suffered severe mental illness, which explains the extreme scarcity "of the Geneva fragments" in "Letters of a Russian traveler".

A. Kara-Murza, M. Talalay, O. Zukova. The charm of beauty: the Amalfi in Russian culture. Moscow, 2016. 

In the collective monograph some evidence on the relationship between Russian culture and the Amalfi coast collected rare. A unique area of the Italian South attracted domestic travelers, pilgrims, writers, and painters (V. Zhukovsky, P. Vyazemsky, S. Shchedrin, I. Bunin, V. Nabokov etc.) for centuries, and in the twentieth century it gave shelter to many immigrants, including writers M. Semenov and Essad-Bei, artists V. Nechitailov and I. Zagoruyko, ballet dancers Leonid Myassin and R. Nureyev.

If Rome is the eternal city, and Venice is a city very artificial, then Florence is a city of nature. In the guise of Florence the harmony of a gorgeous wood is felt, and the stones of Florence seem lighter than stones, of which other cities are composed. One involuntarily doubts, that Florence was created by a human, not a divine hand. This area of the Tuscan land is full of incredible colors and emotions. Here lived, thought, worked, consumed and burned thousands of souls, creating together that incredible atmosphere, because of which here came great writers, musicians and philosophers.

The residents of Naples love the myth about the origin of the city: "When God was handing out land, the Neapolitans were late and they got nothing. Then the Lord gave them a piece of Paradise". One believes in the divine origin of Naples and its environs when sees a Neapolitan thunderstorms, and doubts, when learns roguish and reckless Neapolitans. One believes, when the local fishermen easily catch sharks, and again doubts, when gets unbearable headache from the sharp smell of shells, lemon peels and wines. For foreign travelers lush and beautiful Naples had long been a spicy addition to the journey, not the goal. Only since the nineteenth century here, in places of “dolce farniente” ("sweet doing nothing"), reached out artists, writers, philosophers and historians.
