This book is an anthropological analysis of the phenomenon of the russian left avant-garde, represented, first of all, in works of constructivists, productivists and factographists, which gathered in the 1920th around the reviews LEF and Novy LEF, and such institutes as INHUK, VHUTEMAS and GAKhN. The book argues that the left avant-garde is a self-reflective social and anthropological practice, which loses nothing of its artistic qualities, because of conscious attempt of its protagonists to solve political and everyday problems of the people, which got a possibility of social liberation after 1917. With appropriate interdisciplinary instruments, the book addresses to such different figures as Andrey Bely and Andrey Platonov, Nikolay Evreinov and Dziga Vertov, Gustav Spet, Boris Arvatov etc.

The book presents various aspects of understanding the phenomenon of media and technologically mediated culture, including aesthetic, mediarcheological, socio-political, and anthropological approaches. Effects produced by media - totalizing effects of mass media, contradictory reactions to technological achievements and their supposed freedoms - contribute to the ongoing importance of this concept for cultural criticism. The seeming clarity of what media is, what the mediatory function means, and what the structures of mediality are, if inspected carefully, conceals deeper problems of the connections between the technical and the anthropological, the mechanic and the aesthetic, "immaterial" and "thingly". The categories search of contemporary media theorists goes beyond idiosyncratic descriptions, apocalyptic claims, and techno-visionary prophecies, it is more rigorous and directed towards efficacious knowledge.

The Visual, the Opaque, the Spectral Moscow: New Literary Review, 2011. – 212 p. The monograph is dedicated to an analysis of the visual through the problem of image. It allows the author to emphasize not a “description”, but the conditions which let us see what is being described. Taking advantage of little-known contemporary theories introduced by Vilém Flusser and Rosalind Krauss and bringing under consideration for the first time the works of Marie-José Mondzain, the author seeks to elaborate a large-scale project that would embrace the new approaches to the search of possibility of making a critical judgment regarding the realm of the visual using fundamental notions of “optical”, “iconic”, “medial”. These notions would help one formulate in a new way the problem of correlation between the subject and the object of perception on the example of photography. The book also includes the first Russian translation of a short article by Marie-José Mondzain.

Moscow: Cultural Revolution, 2011. – 608 p. The author has been engaged in research in the sphere of literature and art since mid-1980s. First it was a quite a limited project. It was planned to publish several articles on Russian and European literature (F. Kafka, M. Prouste, A.Platonov and others. The intention was to check how well we can apply the techniques of anthropological analysis to phenomena of literature and art. By the end of 1990s the author defined his aim: on base of one of the leading traditions of Russian literature of 19th – 20th centuries (N. Gogol. F. Dostoevsky, A. Platonov, A. Bely, D. Kharms, A. Vvedensky), which he defines as «other» or «experimental», as opposed to «courteous-noble» of «classicist» one, to trace formation of the idea of a literary work. The division between «literatures» is characteristic, it demonstrates a conflict between two dominant forms of mimesis (more widely — between two world outlooks). We are to know why we do not know and do not understand something, reject something, why a literary work cannot be translated into the language of other time and other works, why the author himself cannot help us, how we can make the author’s incapability the only possible way of access to meaning resources of the work.
Mamardashvili, Merab. Lectures on Ancient Philosophy Edited by Elena Mamardashvili and Andrei Paramonov. Moscow: Progress-Tradition, 2009. – 248 p. In this lecture course, delivered in 1978 -1980, Mamardashvili regards the history of philosophy as history of reflection on the ultimate foundations of the relation of man to the world. He concentrates his attention on the problem of being which got its first formulation in ancient Greek thought. By showing that being is something which is always becoming, the author distills from the doctrines of Greek philosophers the fundamental principles that are the basis of ancient and, later, European ideal of thinking and understanding of world and man.
Mamardashvili, Merab, and Piatigorsky, Alexandre. Symbol and Consciousness. Metaphysical Reflections on Consciousness, Symbolism and Language Edited by Andrei Paramonov and Victoria Faibyshenko. Moscow: Progress-Tradition, 2009. – 288 p. Symbol and Consciousness, the book by Merab Mamardashvili and Alexandre Piatigorsky first printed in 1982 in Jerusalem, offered an interpretation of the life of consciousness through symbols. The notion of symbol was considered outside the traditional understanding of it as a «sign of something else». Symbol is the only way to enter the life of consciousness which, according to the authors, is the ultimate horizon of the philosophical enterprise. The metatheoretical approach to the study of consciousness as practiced in the monograph, offers a particular mode of describing the consciousness which, by introducing the appropriate notions of the sphere, structure and the state of consciousness, opens up the possibility of grasping its symbolic nature. The present edition provides, as of today, the most complete text of the book listing all the discrepancies between the three extant sources, i.e. the Jerusalem (1992) and Moscow (1997) editions as well as the manuscript copy from Merab Mamardashvili personal archive. In appendix the volume contains the article Three conversations on the metatheory of consciousness (A short introduction to the doctrine of Vijñānavāda), which was the authors’ first approach to the subject matter of the later Symbol and Cosciousness. |
